Down south here, close to the mouth of the Mississippi river, we have some of the most incredible action in the world. Speckled trout visit the marshes and beaches of Venice every spring and summer to spawn. Millions of fish stage up and feed heavily.

Our average school-trout, as most southerners would call them, are a pound-and-a -half to two pounds, with many fish pushing the seven to eight pound range, and some larger.

In my experience a huge strike from a 5 to 10 pound speck, or possibly a 10 to 30 pound redfish (very common in the same area), will leave you weak-kneed and shaking.- Brent Ballay

May through August is the perfect time to get out early and experience some of the great topwater action. Throwing top dogs and zara spooks will produce some of the most explosive strikes ever seen. This is exciting and constant. You can really spend the day wearing them out.

The biggest Trout arrive in April through June and then again in October through December. Also, fall is a great time to target speckled trout as they invade the river. From October through December numbers is the game, not size.

Often heavy jigs or live baits are used for some great action on one to two pound fish with plenty of redfish and flounders mixed in.

The boat for the Speckled Trout Charter is Blue Wave 24ft Center Console Bay Boat with a powerful 300 hp Yamaha Outboard and it’s loaded. Your captain provides the ice and fuel. We also provide all the tackle - light weight spinning tackle for the best action on the water.
